In the Elmira College tradition of giving, like the many classes before them, the Class of 1978 wished to endow a meaningful gift to the College in honor of its 40th Reunion in June of 2018. Following the untimely passing of a beloved classmate, Bette A. Mammone '78, in June 2017, the Class's legacy gift came into focus.
The gift established the Bette A. Mammone '78 Memorial Academy, which honors exceptionally successful alumni in business, leadership, community, educational, or philanthropic endeavors by inviting them to participate in an on-campus event with students, faculty, and other alumni. Alumni are selected based on their professional expertise and achievements, as well as dedication to charitable and community initiatives.
Jennifer Congelli Ingold ’95 will join this year’s distinguished list of honored alumni selected for the Bette A. Mammone ’78 Memorial Academy. She was chosen for her leadership, scholarship, and service in education.
While at EC, Ingold studied Social Studies and Secondary Education. Since graduating, she has held a distinguished career in education, receiving numerous awards and recognitions. These include the Outstanding Middle School Social Studies Teacher of the Year Award from the Long Island Council for the Social Studies in 2016. She then received the same honors from both the New York State Council for the Social Studies and the National Council for the Social Studies in 2019. Additional honors include the Cohen-Jordan Secondary Teacher of the Year Award, a regional distinction from the Middle States Council for the Social Studies, and the Mary K. Bonsteel Tachau Teacher of the Year Award from the Organization of American Historians, which is also a national recognition.
